Clinics – Unique program creates leaders out of bullying behaviour
This program is a unique opportunity to cut the circle of violence in bullying and create leaders instead of more violence.
It’s a solution to the bullying problem - giving kids on both sides of bullying behaviour a practical framework to understand what their fear, anger, frustration or even their rage is about – and then it shows them what to do about those feelings.
Working with the horses gives the kids the opportunity to understand and practise using their emotions to resolve their issues. This powerful program creates a non-threatening, direct parallel to the other relationships in their lives.
I’ve seen profound changes as I’ve taught variations of this program to all kinds of people from all walks of life and from all over the world.
I know from first hand experience the kind of behavioural patterns that can be established from the trauma of being bullied - behavioural patterns that to say the least, are not useful to us. I know how the fear and anger and rage of these traumas dramatically and negatively effect other areas of our lives – deeply and forever for some people.
But it is not necessary…
Horses are very good at teaching us in a simple and practical way, how to find the difference and then the balance between, assertiveness and aggression.
Understanding this difference is a key to the transformation brought to so many people by variations of this program.
We often forget that the person doing the bullying, who deveops problem solving methods that have long reaching adverse effects on the rest of their lives too.
The Beat Bullying with Horses program is about:
· Helping people to understand their emotions, why they feel what they feel and what to do about it.
· Teaching the difference between assertiveness and aggression in a simple practical way.
· Using the horses to demonstrate and experience empathy and how we can use that to find peacefulness in our lives.
· Teaching what real leadership is and giving kids the practical skills to help them develop it.
This is a life transforming program.
The program responds to each kid’s individual issues. It’s a flexible program that is a constantly evolving mix of very short lessons with lots of practical hands on stuff, so as to keep the learning interesting.
The work is on the ground, i.e. there is no riding. The kids learn how to connect to the horses, how to understand their own emotions that are raised by the horses and how to understand the horse’s emotions too.
They learn how to move the horse around when it is at liberty, when the horse is free and able to choose how to respond. They learn what to do when the horse says no “I can’t because I’m afraid or I won’t because you’re being too bossy”.
Kids learn from the horse that the only way they will get co-operation from the horse is with the right attitude.
Learning these things with a horse is to learn them in a non-threatening environment. As the program unfolds, the kids get to:
· Understand how what is happening with the horse is exactly the same as what happens in their other relationships.
· Understand why they are angry or frustrated or afraid in certain situations and what they can do about it.
· Learn how to meditate with the horses first and then how meditation comes in many different forms.
· Learn how they can have valuable insights during those meditations that get rid of built up and old anger and frustration and fear.
· Learn about their own behaviour patterns, why they have them and what they can do about them.
And do all this with a flexibility that has each kid working with a horse on their own issues, at their own pace. So that they can take these skills into the future.
We are running the first two day, weekend program January 30th and 31st 2010, giving kids an opportunity to change their lives before they start school this year. It will be 10.00 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, bring their bathers if it’s going to be hot, lunch is provided. We are doing a back to school discount for these two days at $420, family discounts are available.
During the school week, this is usually a three day program – 10.00 am to 2.30 pm. It’s labour intensive – one ‘horsey’ adult to each two or three kids, depending on the circumstances. 8 – 10 kids is a normal size group. The cost is $650 per participant.
Each of the adults involved have trained in both the horse skills, the people skills and the “healing” skills and bring their own unique gifts to this program.
After the kids have done an initial 3day program, some kids may choose to follow up by taking part in a subsequent program for one, two or three days, at no cost. In fact helping other kids to “get it” will deepen their understanding.
Some kids may benefit from working with a horse in an on-going way that would requiremore funding on a case by case basis.
