An easy and beautiful solution for a problem horse

An email from a reader…

“To give you some history I bought Harry in April and he has been steeplechasing for the last 5 years.  He is seven now.
He’s a 16.2hh chestnut gelding and I think he’s beautiful.  However he gets stressed at times (in the oh shit zone - now I know…) and became difficult to handle on the ground.  I moved up to Wellington about a month ago and trucked Harry up from Dunedin.

So I started to try some of your ideas - meditating first and leaving the pressure I’ve been putting on us alone.  (Jenny: Relax, you don’t need to meditate to hear your horse, but I give you a meditation technique in the book to get a quiet mind so that you CAN hear your horse if you’re having trouble) We had soft words and up until Saturday Cheryl had been our translator, Harry yawning and blowing out and relaxing.  Harry had communicated that he was happy and becoming more relaxed.

On Saturday I spent quiet time with him and sat on the ground imagining him being soft and gentle and while at liberty in a square fenced off area he came over and nuzzled me with the softest look in his eye and a big exhale to say “whew, Mum, you’ve done it - thank you” I had a few tears as we shared this special moment of Harry really wanting to be with me and share my space.  An amazing feeling.  He followed me around the area at my elbow and blew out and chewed and was ready to have some fun.

We went for a short ride in the paddock and afterwards he told me that when I rode him, he enjoyed it but because all his life he’d been forcefully told what to do he was confused about what I wanted him to do.  This I can totally understand.  It’s given me more to think about and our future is so exciting!

Thanks Jenny and I’ll keep you posted.”

Cheryl McCullagh, my host for the recent New Zealand clinic says “Liz has had amazing results from reading your book in just days.  She’s feeling very connected to him and it’s great to watch.”

Wow, how awesome is this start to their relationship?  And what’s Liz going to be able to do with this kind of a relationship when she’s eventing with him?  This is the soul connection that I talk about so often, the soul connection that I yearned for all those years ago when I first came into horses and spent my whole life looking for until Bobby and his amazing courage and determination that we both be the best that we can be. Go Liz!
