Horses communicate emotionally
Yesterday, I was working with a horse who had just arrived from Queensland for The Quilty, who was tying up. The Quilty is a 100 mile endurance ride and it’s being held at Tonimbuk this year, relatively close to where I live.
Tying up is a painful muscle condition, with cramping, stiff movement, they don’t want to move when it’s really set in. their heart rate is elevated and they are breathing faster. The horse is in pain when they are tying up.
There is a strong school of thought that nervousnes of the horse is a big contributing factor to horses that tie up, which is why the method of communication in Zen Connection with Horses is so powerful.
After I had finished her healing session, the lovely little horse walking with much looser steps and looking more relaxed in the eye.
I taught her rider how to listen to her horse’s emotional communication so that I could go home for the night and know that the horse could communicate her needs about when to be walked and when to rest etc.
That communication was also going to reduce her nervousness. We are never so worried when we are ill if we know someone is listening to us and taking action on what they hear. Well the same goes for the horse.
This incident reminded me of how easy it is to teach people to do this and made me decide to post this helpful article here on the blog.
Before I start this article, I need you to understand that not everyone communicates with their horse like this. Everybody does communicate and I promise you that. I have never met anybody who didn’t and couldn’t communicate with their horse. But different people and horse combinations have different ways of going about it and different needs.
So, please, do not be disappointed in any way if this way is not your thing. The book and audio lesson set of Zen Connection with Horses, covers the full spectrum of communication and leads you step by step to your best way of doing that.
If this is not your way, do not think that you cannot do this communication thing – there is no failure here, it is not possible. There are many other ways that we talk about in Zen Connection with Horses.
I suggest that you print this article out and keep it somewhere where you can read it and refresh your memory when something goes wrong with your horse and you want to figure out what to do about it.
I’m giving you the instructions about doing this with your horse when something has gone wrong, because that’s the easiest way to do it from a short article, with no background, no understanding necessary and no other information. Zen Connection with Horses goes through this in great step by step detail and thoroughness of understanding.
You could work on a simple health issue or this thing that goes wrong, might be some kind of behaviour that your horse is doing that you are not happy about.
First of all, I want you to stand somewhere safe where you can see your horse. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Think about something nice that you like doing for a minute or two.
Then notice how you feel. Scan your body and notice everything about how you feel, physically and emotionally while you’re thinking about this ‘something that you like doing’.
Then look at your horse.
And notice what changes….
What you will be feeling – the change that you felt – is one way that you experience the connection with your horse. It’s just one way that your horse and you are communicating with each other.
Remember, you are using this technique to have a better understanding of what is going on when something not OK is happening with your horse, so it was probably a yukky kind of a feeling that you experienced.
Now think through options of what you can change, what you can do to help your horse and help yourself.
Dwell on each thing for a few seconds to give your horse and yourself a chance to respond and for you to notice that response.
If what you are thinking of is the right thing, you will notice that you instantly feel better.
If what you are thinking of is NOT the right way to handle this situation or NOT the action that your horse wants or needs you to take, then you feel either no different or you could feel noticeably worse.
Have I been clear enough? The yukky feeling goes away when you have the right answer and then you feel really peaceful – it’s quite noticeable.
Imagine if your horse could communicate what was wrong? Imagine if your horse could communicate with you, so that you could work together for more safety, more fun and whatever it is that you want to achieve with them?
